Calama is a city in the north of Chile.

There's a free tour to the mine if you're interested, to participate one can reservate a seat for the tour at the tourist information (best before 09:00 or the day before).

Bernhard recommends to check cheap hotels rather than the only available (and expensive) hostel in town, though camping outside might be no problem as it nearly never rains here.
