Take the bus to Fachhochschule and exit at the terminus. There is enough space to place yourself, uphill is the motorway to Luxembourg and the road straight (B 51) is heading to Bitburg (and from there on the 60 direction Belgium).
To travel in direction of France and further south , Spain, Portugal but also north towards Belgium , Netherlands and the UK your best bet is from the gasstation "Aire de Berchem", 58km away just below Luxemburg City. This is one of the biggest gasstations in Europe and has a lot of long distance traffic! As hitching out of Trier can be difficult one the best option is to get to Wasserbillig (a bordertown in Luxemburg) and take a train from there to Luxemburg and then to Berchem for 2 Euros! Trains from Wasserbillig leave twice an hour around 13 past and 28 past and take about 30/40(for the later)minutes, from there you can catch a connection South to Berchem four times an hour, the ride only takes 6minutes.. Here you will have to walk a few minutes towards the highway and cross it to get onto the right service station. To get to Wasserbillig hitching is the easiest though ;there is almost always a ticket controller on the trains from Trier to Luxemburg and the tickets cost 10€.You can try hitching anywhere along "Luxemburgerstraße" on the westbank of the Mosel but a fruitfull spot has been the Busstop on the height of Eisenbahnstraße in Trier Euren ,you can easily walk here or take City Bus 2 or 3. There is almost always a ticket controller on From Wasserbillig you can also walk 3km along the trains From Trier road to get to the highwayonramp , but many cars stop before Luxemburg and the tickets cost 10€City
