Young people can speak English and it's not so bad with English in bigger towns. Of course in villages it can become difficult to understand each other. Hitchhiking in Slovak is 'autostop'.
Someone wrote::"Two weeks ago I was in Slovakia. I was at a gas station asking people for a lift. After 2 hours some cops arrived and told me that hitchhiking in Slovakia is illegal (everywhere!) and drivers can get a 100 euro fine (new law). After 4 hours the cops left the station and a Czech person took me. He told me that this is true..."
