So you made it somehow to Raiatea in French Polynesia, Congratulations!

Hitchhiking around the island

It is a small island and not much populated so hitching around is a great activity to get to know the locals and the island.

It maybe is more difficult than on Moorea or Tahiti but it is easily possible. You will find sooner or later a ride and people tend to drive a bit further than where they wanted to go to. It should take about 4 or 5 hours to do the whole loop, with plenty of stops to take pictures and looking at sites. Sometimes drivers are very friendly and will give even a touristic drive with lots of information.

Especially in the South there are not many people living and be warned that you may end up walking for an entire hour or more. Not because nobody will stop but simply because there are NO CARS (going the desired direction). This happened to Bernhard on a Saturday at 11am.

But yet again, no need to worry, sooner or later someone will be driving past and this car definitely will stop and ask what the * you are about doing here.
