Next to the football stadium, take the "av de valle inclan" , there is a good petrol station (a bit on the east of the gmap point) where you can thumb, ask and even sleep in the hill if you arrived too late...
EDIT (September 2010): The gas station mentioned above was closed due to construction work; but never mind, there is a way better (and bigger) just 800 or so meters back to the East (and there are no crossings along the way); we got a hitch to Gibraltar/Tarifa within 10min!
