Sakha Republic (Yakutia) (Russian: Республика Саха (Якутия)) is the largest federal subject of Russia by area.

  • Part of the Far Eastern Federal District.
  • Yakutia is the largest administrative-territorial entity in the world. It is larger than Kazakhstan and bigger than Argentina. However, the population is less than one million, resulting in one of the lowest population densities in Russia (only Chukotka and Nenets Autonomous Okrug have lower densities). Its total area is 3,103,200 km².
  • The administrative center is the city of Yakutsk. Locals often refer to Yakutsk simply as "the city."
  • Yakutia shares borders with Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Magadan Oblast, Khabarovsk Krai, Amur Oblast, Zabaykalsky Krai, Irkutsk Oblast, and Krasnoyarsk Krai.
  • Region code: 14

Hitchhiking out

Specific Features of Hitchhiking and Travel

  • There are very few asphalt roads across the vast territory of Yakutia. In the autumn and spring, gravel roads and winter tracks can become impassable, and fording rivers can be a real challenge due to sudden rises in water after rains.
  • Due to a lack of roads, river transport is developed. Many hitchhikers have traveled by "hydrostop" (hitching rides on boats and ships) along the great Siberian rivers.
  • From remote settlements, it's possible to "air-hitchhike" with small planes or helicopters.
  • Border zone: There is a 100 km wide border zone along the coast, including settlements (urban-type, district centers) like Chersky, Nizhneyansk, and Tiksi, as well as all Arctic islands (including the New Siberian Islands). To visit the border zone, a special permit is required and should be obtained in advance (for example, via the government services website "Gosuslugi").
