Birobidzhan (Russian: Биробиджан) is the capital of the Jewish Autonomous Region in Russia. It is one of the smallest regional centers (74,000 people) in Russia, located in Eastern Siberia, between Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The Trans-Siberian Railway and the federal highway R297 "Amur" pass through the city. A bypass road was built between 2003 and 2006, skirting the city from the northeast, so transit hitchhikers can avoid entering the city.
