Hitchhiking in
- By land: In 2009, off-roaders from the "Square Wheel" club (not on their first try!) drove in winter from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Magadan (and further to Vladivostok). However, it is unlikely others will be able to repeat this feat, as Kamchatka, though a peninsula, is separated from the mainland by hundreds of kilometers of impassable forests, mountains, and swamps. In 2011, an expedition led by Sergey Lekai from the "Academy of Free Travel" made a walking/water journey from Magadan to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky using rafts and sometimes a helicopter. As the journey took over four months, it cannot be recommended as a realistic route, so for practical purposes, Kamchatka is best considered an "island." Even locals call traveling to the mainland "to the continent."
- By water: In the past, there was a passenger steamship from Vladivostok to Kamchatka. Now, only cargo ships and cruise liners visit the port. It's theoretically possible to reach Kamchatka by "boat hitchhiking" from other Far East ports (Vladivostok, Nakhodka), but it is very difficult, requires special permits, and considerable persistence. For paid passage, contact Sakhalin Shipping Company, which serves this line.
- By air: The only known person to successfully "air hitchhike" to Kamchatka is Marina Galkina, who obtained official permission. All other travelers arrive by regular paid flights, searching for sales and discounts.
