Earth > Europe > Southern Europe > Balkans > Kelebia-Tompa border crossing

The Kelebia-Tompa border crossing links the Hungarian city Kiskunhalas and Serbia's Subotica.

Hitchhiking out

The crossing is situated on the 53, which is a local highway to Kiskórös from Subotica. It is not very common border-path, because of that there is almost no traffic except the trucks. There is no walking path for people, however you are allowed to pass through the gates of light cars. Because there is no car traffic, it's easy and fast.

Because there is almost no traffic it won't be easy to hitchhike from there (but still possible!) and normally will depend only on your luck.

The first petrol station on the Hungarian side is 7km away from the border. It's easier to find a car going other side: Hungary-Serbia, because Subotica city is located closer to the border and measured as relatively big unlike the Hungarian.

Personal experience

Summer 2022: I got lucky and was picked up by a Serbs going for a seasonal work in Germany. They had no GPS (because of no roming) so I got picked up. They got me till Budapest in 2h car trip -- HHer-Vert

Accommodation and Sleep

From Hungarian side it's easy to find a place for a stay. Walking into Hungary, on the border you will find forest and some abandoned houses.
