Birobidzhan (Russian: Биробиджан) is the capital of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast, one of the smallest regional centers in Russia (population about 74,000). It is located in Eastern Siberia, between Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The Trans-Siberian Railway and the federal highway R297 "Amur" pass through the city. Since 2003–2006, a bypass road was constructed around the northeast of the city, so transit hitchhikers can skip entering the city.
