If you really don't want to make the detour try at least to hitch a car not from Ukraine. The polish and other cars (from EU countries) are faster proceeded, at least at the Polish side. It could be worth to wait for a van, since they are not waiting in the same line as passenger cars. Same goes for trucks, but truck drivers might be more reluctant to pick you up and face longer controls.

Many drivers proceeding through the border crossing are smugglers who go no further than the parking lot on the Polish side. However, it is easy to stop a car on the road leading away from the border crossing, a bit up from the police checkpoint and next to the sign reading "Welcome to the European Union".
