Ubud is a town on the Indonesian island of Bali, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the Gianyar regency.
Hitchhiking out
Hitching out of the center of Ubud proved to be almost impossible for someone with a European/American complexion - lots of taxis stopped and any car or motorbike that stopped suddenly turned into a taxi.
But it is possible to hitch out of Ubud if you walk west out of Ubud a couple of kms until you get to the north-south road called Jl. Raya Tebongkang (which goes between Denpasar and Mt Batur). One hitchhiker hitched a pickup truck on this road heading south in about 5 minutes, no official or unofficial taxis stopped either.
