'''Vyshny Volochyok''' (Russian: Вышний Волочёк) is a city in [[Russia]], located in the north of the [[Tver Oblast]].

The city received its name from the uppermost portage on the ancient water route from the Baltic to the Caspian Sea, "The Route from the Varangians to the Arabs." This is where Russia's first hydraulic engineering system was created. The city stands on a network of canals and islands. It is sometimes jokingly referred to by hitchhikers as "Vsevyshny Svolochyok" (the Almighty Scoundrel), because the [[M10]] highway winds through it in a very tricky manner, and many generations of hitchhikers have spent hours trying to get out of the city.

There is now a bypass option via the toll motorway [[M11]].
