Hitchhiking out
South-east towards La Guerche de Bretagne
To reach the roundabout of La Guerche de Bretagne on the city outskirts, either walk (about 15 minutes from the center) or take the local bus (which is free but only runs once per hour – so it's often easier to walk).
You can hitchhike directly at the roundabout, where there is enough space for cars to stop, or continue out of town, past two small roundabouts. Near the town exit sign, there is also space to stop.
You rarely have to wait long here!
East towards Paris
The aim is to reach the Etrelles bridge, about 4 km away. This bridge crosses the National road N157 which continues as the A81. The bridge is on the road to La Guerche. So, start by hitchhiking in the direction of La Guerche (very easy), and get out at the location of the bridge.
Here, hitchhiking towards Laval, on the access ramp, is also quite quick.
Ask the driver to drop you either at the Montdevert service area (a Total petrol station about ten kilometers from there), or at the Gravelle toll barrier. Both options work well. It's easy to find someone heading to Paris from here!
West towards Rennes
Head to the commercial area with many shops, including Intermarché, called La Barratière. There's a major roundabout there. Go about a hundred meters in the direction of Rennes from the roundabout, where there's a spot for cars to pull over.
The N157 is about 8 km from here. If a driver offers to drop you at the access ramp, refuse, as it's easier to hitchhike from Vitré than from the ramp itself. However, if someone is going to Châteaubourg, take the ride! It's very easy to hitchhike from Châteaubourg to Rennes.
