Hitchhiking out
West towards Nazran and Beslan via R217 (also known as M29)
- There is a traffic police checkpoint and a large petrol station at the beginning of the bypass road.
- From the city center you can take a minibus heading to Chernorechye to its final stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the highway. There are not many convenient spots for hitchhiking, but you can find some parking bays even though there are curbs.
- Another option is to take minibus #1 from a bit outside the center along Kan-Kalika street to Chernorechye – this is more effective in the afternoon, since all the minibuses passing along Kadyrova Avenue are usually full, while it is usually possible to board #1.
East towards Gudermes, Khasavyurt, and Makhachkala via R217 (also known as M29)
- From the city center, take minibus #15 to the "Globus" shopping mall.
North towards the settlement of Tolstoy-Yurt via Petropavlovskoye highway (R308)
- On the outskirts of the city is the bus depot (PATP), there should be buses going there.

Other useful info
Grozny is considered one of the safest cities for travelers in Russia. There is almost no street crime, pickpocketing, or scams. You will rarely see drunk people, and drug use is infrequent. Police do not harass travelers asking for registration. People are very polite in institutions, and many are eager to help and genuinely happy to see guests. You might even get invited for a family meal or a celebration by strangers.
Sometimes a zealous policeman may try to prohibit photographing certain objects like Grozny City, but calmly explain your rights, and usually you can continue shooting without problems.
There are restrictions on filming near the residence of Ramzan Kadyrov – do not photograph the residence itself.
Important: Never swear in the presence of Chechens! Avoid any references to sexual topics, especially around women. A woman smoking in the company of men is frowned upon.
Hitchhiking in Chechnya is among the best in the Russian Caucasus, only comparable with Ingushetia and Dagestan. Many drivers will show you photos of their families – it’s a point of pride!
Public transport
- Bus service exists, but is rarely used.
- The trolleybus network was closed in 1994.
- Trams were dismantled by 2007.
- Marshrutkas (route taxi minibuses) are the most common form of public transport and are often crowded.
Food
- The city has a great variety of fancy restaurants, trendy cafes, regular eateries, and simple kiosks.
- The streets around the "Berkat" market and Putin Avenue are teeming with small, cheap cafes. A notable cheap and good café is "Aspect" (Mira St, 73).
- In the season, you can find boiled corn everywhere – either on the cob, or cleaned kernels in paper cups.
- The main center for shashlik (barbecue) is far from the center, on Yuzhnaya Street. Sanitation is questionable, but the food is very tasty!
- There are several McDonald's clones. RoyalBurger (Lorsanova St, 10) copies the American original except for the name.
- There’s a good snack bar at Esambaeva Ave (Revolutsii), 12.
- There is a canteen on the 3rd floor of the tower with an observation deck in the Grozny City business center.
