==Legality==
Many people believe hitchhiking in New York is illegal. (Which law is being broken? Please note it here!)
It's illegal, sort of. Most people think and say it's illegal in general. Even if it's not actually illegal, the cops can probably find ways to ticket you for ''loitering'' or ''vagrancy''. If there are cops, just do whatever they say, stay friendly, and say you got a ride share on Craigslist, but need to get to wherever you going. Say you need to get to a Greyhound or a train station. They might even give you a ride there.
People It's legal to hitchhike in New York State (excluding the North, especially in the Adirondacks, are very friendly though. You can also do some great wild camping. (If Thruway) so long as you hear bells, don't worry, just start countingstand in the traffic lanes.)
When coming down from Quebec, going It is definitely illegal to [[hitchhike on any part of the New York City]] it's probably better to stick State Thruway. § 102.4 Hitchhiking; loitering. The solicitation of a ride, commonly known as hitchhiking, or stopping any vehicle for the purpose of picking up or discharging a hitchhiker, on any portion of the I-9Thruway system, including toll plazas, on which you can easily walk (and legallyis prohibited. Loitering in or about the toll plazas or any other portion of the Thruway system, if you weren't for the purpose of hitchhiking) or for any other purpose, instead is prohibited. There is a [http://www.digihitch.com/usa351.html good article on digihitch] which explains the legality of the I-87hitchhiking in New York.

The Thruway is a toll road running across the state. Although many cars have electronic toll cards (EZPass), its still possible to get picked up at the toll booths, although this is illegal (see above).
