A street called "Puijonkatu" goes through center, follow it towards north. After the bus station, take the right side of the street and cross "Puutarhakatu". Stay on the right side of the road and keep on walking even though there's no side walk. Turn right to a ramp, it is the next exit. Walk a bit forward. I wouldn't recommend you to go all the way to the motorway to hitch hike, while firstly it's not that easy for the cars to stop there because they drive so fast and secondly it's illegal to hh/stop on a motorway. On the ramp the cars don't drive that fast yet and there's enough space for the cars to stop.
It's pretty easy to get a ride at least to the "Joensuu ramp" from here, which is about 10 kilometers away, where you can take the road number 17 9 towards Joensuu. There's a bus stop about 300 meters away from the motorway. To go to north, stay on the road 5/E63.
