Around june, july and august this is the best way to get to Cooktown. Do make sure to double check with people since it is a 4 wheel drive road, albeit a very trafficked one because it is the quickest way to get to and from [[Cooktown]].
One piece of advice might be to not trust the folks in [[Cairns]] to too much as to whether or whether not the road is open though. Asking in Aboriginals locals in ''Mossman'' (normally easily located under the bridge on the ''Mossman river' just out of town) is a really good way of finding out if the road is open since the Gugu Yalanyi nation extends all the way from ''Port Douglas'' to up towards ''Cooktown'' so they normally know if the road is open.
