On major highways it is easy to get a lift. All the roads between Kathmandu, Pokhara, cities of Chitwan, Lumbini, Bhairahawa or hitchhiking to India through Sonauli work well.
For short distances in or between the villages the very small trucks are a good target. If they stop, no talk is needed just jump up to the back side of the truck and make a signal (knock) later when you wish to get off.
Waiting times can be long in remote areas due to lack of traffic, and in fact on some roads the only vehicles that will pass by are buses.
Truck drivers are unlikely to speak English. Bring a Nepali phrasebook and -- because many truck drivers are coming from India -- a Hindi phrasebook as well.
