Jersey is southernmost and biggest island of the Channel Islands group just offshore Brittany and Normandy in France. Despite its location near the french coast, the Bailiwick of Jersey remains a private property to the British Crown; therefore it holds an independent status inside the United Kingdom. The capital and main harbour is St. Helier.
The island is big enough for cars to circulate, and a maximal speed of 40mph could facilitate hitchhiking. The longest straight journey you could undertake are some 11 miles (about 17km). == Hitchhiking to the island ==The Condor ferry's to the island are pay per passenger, howeverso it's not hitchable. It may be posssible to hitch private ships or fishing boats. Condor Ferries serves Jersey  Ferry's to the island leave from : Portsmouth, Poole, St Malo, Cherbourg, Granville and Carteret.  If you plan to hitch a ride on the UK boat to your destination make sure not to check-in any lugagge, as you will have to exit with all the foot passengers to collect it. == Hitchhiking on the island ==Hitchhiking on the island is very easy. Traffic isn't going very fast so it's easy to find a place where people can stop safely. With a very low crime-rate on the island, people are not scared to pick up strangers. == Personal expierence ==In May 2024 I spent 3 days hiking, hitchhiking and Franceriding busses on the island. On the smaller roads I would walk untill I'd hear a car coming my way and give it the thumb. On the bigger A-roads I would find any place where I was reasonable visable and hitch from there. The walking/hitching didn't always work, but those ferries donthat't seem s mainly due to low volumes of trafffic. Standing on the A-roads I never waited more than 10 minutes. Many drivers would take a detour to bring me exactly where I wanted to be hitchable go.   --Chris9012 (being paid for per passengertalk) 14:14, not per vehicle12 May 2024 (CEST).
