Hi Platschi. Thanks for the welcome. My pleasure adding info about Georgia - I should have more up soon. As for Russia, I don't have much info. The relations between the two countries are very tense right now. I think all of the borders are technically closed. If you do some more research though, maybe you can find a way... --Wrv1983

Hey, welcome to this User talk page. Feel free to leave a note, ask questions or whatever.

Hi Platschi! I tried to change the boxes but cause I didn't have a hitchwiki account when I wrote them , I can't edit them. The owner is anonymous. So, find the city calles Jyväskylä. There are 3 thumbs in the map, the wrong texts are: "E63/9/23 westwards..." should be "E63/9/23 east- and southwards...". "West- and southwards..." should be "East- and southwards". I'm such an idiot sometimes :). Btw, do need some help translating the phrase book in Finnish? I could do that if it hasn't been done yet. Anyways, thank you for your help! Annika

Hi Ralf. Have you never noticed the bay where drivers can stop, just after the traffic lights at the beginning of the Bay Oeyenhausen Bundesstrasse section? Looked like a nice place to hitchhike, which, however, we as the transit hitchers will never use, since we will probably never end up there. Although of course, you can never really say never... --Fverhart 14:52, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

:Hey Frank, no, never seen that bay! Should check it next time, but mostly people just drive into town or towards Minden, so they're not even going to the end of town. So for the lazy people, the first Shell station might be the best option as it's at the beginning when coming from the A2. And, about us as transit hitchers :) , I got rides towards Oeynhausen several times now, find it quite difficult to get direct rides from Auetal for example to Osnabrück or further most times. Also, when going east, the service station Grönegau sucks most of the time for me (waiting nearly always >30min). Then better stick to the on-ramp Melle-Ost 4km before, it has a nice spot and lot's of traffic going to Oeynhausen, where you then can ask at the first service station where there's always busy :) But that's probably just what I think about it... :) --Platschi 14:38, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Hey,

::Hi Ralf. The bay to the east is just at the beginning of Bad Oeyenhausen, just after the end of the A30. It's logically at the beginning, how I remember there's a city map for people entering the town. Regarding Gronegau, thanks for the information. The one time that I stood there, 27.12.2008, I got away in 3 minutes and got a lift of 151 km to Zweidorfer Holz, according to my list. For me it was great so. I remember a Dutch couple with a nice discussion about discovering the simple ways of living in places... If you asked me, I would try to avoid Bay Oeyenhausen, but I've passed by no more than five-six times. --Fverhart 08:43, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
When you were hitchhiking in Serbia did you do a lot of camping? I'm a bit concerned about camping in places like Serbia and Croatia, where they apparently have unexploded mines still lying around in various places. Do you know if these are quite common and/or if the areas are closed off or what?

Thanks! :)

It'd be nice to camp out in the wild there but I don't fancy having an 'explosive' time!

Hi Platschi; cheers for the thumbs up :-) I'm off myself for a wee trip to my lass in a few hours, should be at Oldenzaal-Zuid around 14:00 :-) Taking bus 64 from my home anyway :-)

Sorry to hear you had such a hard time in Bashkiria. I've hitchhiked there and never waited more than 5 minutes, just like in the rest of Russia. If you didn't get picked up by a truck right away, it was probably because you were too close to a DPS post, and truck drivers were too nervous to take two people past it (they can only have one passenger legally).
Funny that you've been giving a bunch of street corners in Bentheim and Schüttorf hitching spots... I usually just walk between these two villages; the Bentheimerwald is very nice. Cheers! clint.hotvedt 09:40, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! :) (Not sure if I'm posting my reply in the correct place here.) How was hitchhiking in the Balkans? Do you recommend solo hitchhiking at all? I'm starting to wonder if hitchhiking by myself for my first time could be a bad idea and become lonely, but I'm sure it would give me more opportunities for meeting people along the way!

:Dear Robert, a gas station is the American English pendant to petrol station used in Britain. As we have no specific regional English specified for this website, I guess gas station fits as well as petrol station. See for an example. Nevertheless, installing a spelling checker might be useful, you're right. --Platschi 21:24, 6 November 2010 (CET)

::If you have been following what I've been doing, you might notice that I stick to continental spelling, i.e. articles about Europe should mention petrol stations and motorways, articles about the US can mention gas stations and highways. The only thing I have trouble with is metre/meter - centre/center. I myself prefer the American spelling, but I leave them as-is. Prino 22:37, 6 November 2010 (CET)
 +
:::On the continent (not on the Islands) people usually use "highway" and "gas station", I hardly ever hear mainland Europeans say "motorways" or "petrol station" when they speak English, I actually had to look up the exact meaning when I saw it in one of your edits...  guaka 23:04, 6 November 2010 (CET)
 +
:Well,I never use the words petrol station or motorway while talking English. Maybe because I've never been to the UK. When writing articles I usually stick to the common language I use with drivers, mainly in Eastern Europe, and here it's hard sometimes (if no common language available) to even explain them the meaning of gas station, not to mention the word petrol. The German-English mix of Tank Station sometimes helps wonders, though completely incorrect. I know it doesn't look very aesthetic on the wiki if different words of the same meaning are in use everywhere. We can either start writing a short common language guide for the experienced users that are more into editing minor grammar and spelling mistakes, or just leave it as it is. I prefer the first, to have an overview about specific writing styles throughout the English wiki. I guess a great percentage of users here are no native English speakers, so mistakes are normal and quite reasonable. I'm really happy we have users like you who take care of correcting! --Platschi 23:25, 6 November 2010 (CET)

::I'll do a scientific investigation (among Belgians, Germans and whoever else I might encounter) next time I'm on the road, which will hopefully be sometime before the end of the month. I do know that asking for gas stations in Scandinavia will not be understood, and in Sweden, Denmark and Norway they talk about motorväg/motorvei/motorvei) Prino 23:40, 6 November 2010 (CET)
 +
: FWIW, I hear "petrol station" all the time among European hitchhikers, to the point where I've come to adopt the term myself although I grew up speaking US English. "Gas station" definitely feels out of place in Europe. "Highway" seems more common than "motorway" on the continent, though. CRCulver 06:39, 7 November 2010 (CET)
 +
::Ok, maybe I was wrong.  Well, one term not yet mentioned is "tank station", sometimes used by Dutch speakers - and no I'm not proposing we would ever leave that in our articles ;) guaka 14:15, 7 November 2010 (CET)

Hey, welcome to this User talk page. Feel free to leave a note, ask questions or whatever.

Bad Oeynhausen

Hey Frank, no, never seen that bay!
Hi Ralf.
Hey Frank, just used the bay a week ago and got a ride offer to Leipzig there within not even one minute. It was traffic jam though, but works pretty fine :) Indeed there's a city map also; just put some little more information on the Oeynhausen article.Indeed you can avoid Oeynhausen, but when going onto the A30 or coming from there it's impossible not to get through there ;) --Platschi 17:09, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Liftpunt.Tk

Hi, fellow Dutch hitchhiker. There is a new discussion forum about hitchhiking in Dutch language. Discover it, and feel free to join and share your knowledge. First spot on the net where we can discuss in our own language =). URL www.liftpunt.tk --Fverhart 08:43, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Russia

Sorry to hear you had such a hard time in Bashkiria. I've hitchhiked there and never waited more than 5 minutes, just like in the rest of Russia. If you didn't get picked up by a truck right away, it was probably because you were too close to a DPS post, and truck drivers were too nervous to take two people past it (they can only have one passenger legally).

Hey Ralf, sagmal wennde in Russland unterwegs bist. --Quarim 15:27, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

Hallo Platschi! Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm excited to be apart of this awesome project! Yeah, I read the page for Texas - yikes. The state might not be so promising, but Austin is asking to be explored hitchwise. I'll see what I can do! Say Hi to the Netherlands and Germany for me! Wonderful and happy adventures. :) - Safira (P.S. I'm not really sure where to put this response, so hope this is ok!)

Get an English spelling checker...

Please... ;)

Dear Robert, a gas station is the American English pendant to petrol station used in Britain. As we have no specific regional English specified for this website, I guess gas station fits as well as petrol station. See [1] for an example. Nevertheless, installing a spelling checker might be useful, you're right. --Platschi 21:24, 6 November 2010 (CET)
If you have been following what I've been doing, you might notice that I stick to continental spelling, i.e. articles about Europe should mention petrol stations and motorways, articles about the US can mention gas stations and highways. The only thing I have trouble with is metre/meter - centre/center. I myself prefer the American spelling, but I leave them as-is. Prino 22:37, 6 November 2010 (CET)
On the continent (not on the Islands) people usually use "highway" and "gas station", I hardly ever hear mainland Europeans say "motorways" or "petrol station" when they speak English, I actually had to look up the exact meaning when I saw it in one of your edits... guaka 23:04, 6 November 2010 (CET)
Well,I never use the words petrol station or motorway while talking English.
I'll do a scientific investigation (among Belgians, Germans and whoever else I might encounter) next time I'm on the road, which will hopefully be sometime before the end of the month. I do know that asking for gas stations in Scandinavia will not be understood, and in Sweden, Denmark and Norway they talk about motorväg/motorvei/motorvei) Prino 23:40, 6 November 2010 (CET)
FWIW, I hear "petrol station" all the time among European hitchhikers, to the point where I've come to adopt the term myself although I grew up speaking US English. "Gas station" definitely feels out of place in Europe. "Highway" seems more common than "motorway" on the continent, though. CRCulver 06:39, 7 November 2010 (CET)
Ok, maybe I was wrong. Well, one term not yet mentioned is "tank station", sometimes used by Dutch speakers - and no I'm not proposing we would ever leave that in our articles ;) guaka 14:15, 7 November 2010 (CET)
Science? 6890 results for "gas station" from Belgium, 1070 results for "petrol station from Belgium, 67600 results for "gas station" from Germany", 19900 results for "petrol station" from Germany. No, not science, but it could be a factor to take into account :) guaka 14:18, 7 November 2010 (CET)
OK if we're going that way, you also need to change the language to Dutch (or French): benzine station (3,930), petrol station (295) and gas station (899) Very few gas station results on the first returned page have anything to do with petrol stations...

Why did you remove the great news about the Russian stuff? guaka 00:22, 24 November 2010 (CET)

Some authors from the AVP claimed their copyright on some content, so we have to fix this issues first before starting to copy/paste everything :( See ru:Обсуждение участника:Platschi. --Platschi 13:20, 24 November 2010 (CET)

Uruguay

Yo! Check this out! :-) I moved some general bits from Hitchwiki to there. In the future there will be more visible linking between these wikis so we can keep Hitchwiki more for hitchhiking stuff and Nomadwiki for the rest.-Mikael (talk) 00:19, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Hitchwiki administration

Hello Platschi,
Are you still involved in the technical administration of Hitchwiki? If not, do you know who is? Thanks!--Zenit (talk) 10:58, 3 November 2020 (CET)

Hi Zenit, not really know who currently does which technical aspect but I'm in some github repositories where some folks work on the wiki. Contact me by email (platschi AT posteo DOT org) and I guide you further :) --platschi

Hey platschi, sorry for writing on such small things, but I though you might be concerned by this. User dxc has done multiple edits that involves blanking pages you've created. He has seemingly been given administrator powers. Here's an example of such edits.
