: "Northwards" means "going towards the north", which describes an initial hitch-out direction better since the direction usually changes when a certain routing is chosen; "North towards" means "going towards somewhere in the north" while this "somewhere" might not be actually in the north even if the initial motorway connection is "northwards". The ambiguity comes from whether we indicates the "routing direction" or "destination direction". --[[User:Phlyming|Phlyming]] 18:48, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for your contributions and welcome to Hitchwiki! guaka 13:48, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Please stop changing heading to "Southwards", "Northwards", etc. The standard form is "North/South towards". Thanks. CRCulver 16:58, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Christopher, I'm not sure. Google gives me quite a bit of results for Southwards, even dictionary entries! But I know you're a native speaker, so I trust your judgment on this. Still, is there a definite answer (link) to this somewhere? guaka 17:19, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
"Southwards", "northwards" are adverbs. When you are specifying cities, you need a preposition. E.g. "Southwards Paris" are two words that don't parse together. But "South towards Paris" does make sense. That's just how the headings have been for the 3+ years I've been editing here. CRCulver 17:46, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
