Resemblance to WikiTravel

Hello! Whatever you did worked. There's now no resemblance, so no problem!

Robin Patterson 03:46, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

Okay! Cool :) Guaka 08:41, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

That apostrophe

To save making you look twice, here's another thought I've had:

I see some recent moves probably related to standardising your apostrophe placement in "Hitchhikers". I've not looked to see how it all ended up.

But there's still a problem, as of a few minutes ago. Your main article namespace - http://hitchhiking.wikicities.com/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=&namespace=0 - contains pages that start with "Hitchhikers' Guide to Hitchhiking:". If they were redirects to matching "project" namespace pages - http://hitchhiking.wikicities.com/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=&namespace=4 - that start with "Hitchhiker's Guide to Hitchhiking:", no problem. But they are not. That namespace is practically unused.

You do know, I suppose, that you can type "project:" and let the software sort out the long prefix?

No I didn't. :)

So I suggest that you grab those "s-apostrophe" pages and Move them all to the corresponding "project:" page if that's what you meant for them (which you probably did, as they are "About" and "Why this wiki?", etc).

Robin Patterson 03:46, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

Sort of did that now. Hope it's awrite now. Guaka 08:41, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

Anarchopedia

Hoj Guaka. Maybe you want to check what I am doing on this page Anarchopedia:Hitchhiking Wiki datadump, basically the same as what was done with infoAnarchy wiki. I think it is useful to have redundancy, so that the content stays should one website go offline for any reason. I am not sure how many articles to move, I think I will just start with the ones I find most interesting. Rev 22 21:48, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, redundancy can be good, but it can also lead to double work. Can you contact me by mail? kas per DOT sou ren AROBASE gmail PUNTO com. There's always Google cache if one website is offline for a bit. Guaka 23:42, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
My initial idea was not to move all data, just the most interesting and relevant. Relevant data attracts users, and eventually contributors. Every article will link to articles on this project so the score search engine for it will increase. Google cache is not reliable as a backup, except for reasonably popular articles in popular websites, but even then recreating mediawiki code from cached data (html) is a suboptimal solution (except if formatted text is all you care about). Rev 22 02:08, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

great stuff

This is really nice work. Let me know if you would like us to promote in via the wikia spotlight when you're ready. You should also talk to bill on http://World.wikia.com about cross-linking! Gil (talk) 15:11, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note - I believe Bill added you to World Wikia
As for ads, I know they are a bit annoying, but we use 100% of the ad revenue to pay for our servers and bandwith (and still lose money) so I hope you understand that we need to cover our costs. Given our topics are more fun and less "educational" than Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales decided that we would not easily get donations, so he made Wikia a commercial business. We could put the ads on the top of the page instead of the right hand side if you found that easier on your eyes :-). World had an that made us take them off temporarily, I expect they'll be back as soon as the engineers have time to quickly fix the code. Also, I couldn't tell from your comment if you wanted your wiki promoted in the spotlight. Thanks! Gil (talk) 22:59, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

I like it!..

I just fuckin like this wiki - nearly as much as I like hitchhiking... :-) --Speckmade 18:04, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Moving help

What do you need? Zactalk 00:13, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Some things:

  • When the next Wikia database dump is imported at hitchwiki.org I want to go through all pages, check if they are the same on both sites and place the {{moved}} template at Wikia. It would be great to have some help with that. The next database dump will probably be available on the 27th of November.
  • A cool logo!
  • Let's write a project:Thanks to Wikia for hosting. GuakaTalkCS 01:04, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

confused...

hitchhikingguide.org? hitchhiking.wikia.com? world.wikia.org? hitchwiki.org?

Can you please tell (maybe at a prominent place) about what is now what, what is related to what in which way?

This Wiki moved from hitchhikingguide.org to hitchhiking.wikia.com - and then? to hitchwiki.org? Is this now the official, persistent version, hte version to edit? What happened to hitchhiking.wikia.org? What is that world.wikia.org it now redirects to? (Seems like it serves exactly the same purpose like Wikitravel... Where does it come from?)

Why does it show me my old userpage here and complains when I try to log in here, that there is no user of that name? Do I have to recreate an account here?

Questions over questions that I've not been able to answer completely on my own... --Speckmade 17:50, 12 Dec 2006 (UTC)

The wiki recently move from hitchhiking.wikia.org to hitchwiki.org. We transfered all the pages (including userpages) to here, but unfortunately, wikia doesn't let one export user-accounts, so you will have to register here again. wikia made the old url redirect to world.wikia.com, and we can do nothing about that. This seems to confuse a lot of people :(. Anyway, now we have our own domain and own databases, so the wiki will stay here forever :) --MrTweek 21:34, 12 December 2006 (CET)
Ok, something for project:history :) Guaka 00:34, 13 December 2006 (CET)
OK! Nice news! Thanks! (Hehe: My talk page is still there...)
Who will start this project:history? Would be definately nice - like that people get the chance to find out on their own or one can just give the link for these questions...
Greetings - Speckmade 04:45, 13 December 2006 (CET)
I just copied Tweek's reply to Hitchwiki:About#Frequently Asked Questions. :) Guaka 05:13, 13 December 2006 (CET)
Thanks - that's nice.--Speckmade 02:39, 14 December 2006 (CET)

Copyright violation

Grr. There's a Associated Press story syndicated all over the world today, and it says that "World Wikia has resources on how to hitchhike out of Tokyo." Guess what? That's my article, which I licensed to Wikitravel, and which you copied to World Wikia and HitchWiki.org with no attribution of any kind.

Now yes, I did dual-license the content as GFDL, but you're not following the conditions of the license:

B. List on the Title Page, as authors, one or more persons or entities responsible for authorship of the modifications in the Modified Version, together with at least five of the principal authors of the Document (all of its principal authors, if it has fewer than five), unless they release you from this requirement.

I expect a major apology from you, and please remove every last word of my content you've copied here or elsewhere unless you can figure out a way to do what you're supposed to do according to the license: credit the author(s). Also remember that, for other Wikitravel content, GFDL and CC by-sa are not compatible. 59.161.79.82 05:38, 20 December 2006 (CET) (wikitravel:User:Jpatokal)

Ok, I'm very sorry. I know CC-BY-SA and GFDL aren't compatible, and I see that I made a mistake when I copied the text without a more specific mention.
I saw your other edits on this wiki. I hope Tokyo and Japan are okay on this wiki now? Guaka 13:27, 20 December 2006 (CET)
On this wiki, yes, apology accepted. But please review your contributions of my content to World Wikia. 61.246.40.184 18:58, 20 December 2006 (CET) (Jpatokal)

Hi! Super! Maybe we can set up a Spanish version of Hitchwiki, also hosted by MrTweek? Seria mucho mas chevere!
Also, moving away from Wikia was not too hard, but it didn't go as smooth as expected.
Si prefieres, tambien puedes escribirme en castellano.
It might be easier to communicate through email: kasper punto souren arobase gmail punto com. Ciao, Guaka 02:08, 16 February 2007 (CET)

Gracias Guaka por contestar tan rapido! te escribo por email, subjet: AUTOSTOP ARGENTINA thanks!, SAn

Couch Surfing

Yeah, I've looked into that site. A good majority of the people who've offered places to stay I've met off that site. Hoping to find more.

Cool! Usually it works better once you get more contacts on CS. Have fun! Guaka 10:30, 8 March 2007 (CET)

Mapping locations -- Google Maps?

Hi!

I'm sure you know that Google has recently opend up their API in Google Maps just a little, allowing you to create and share locations/KML (shapes, points and lines) created via the Google Maps interface. I realize that another system is being used on various articles in Wikipedia (to tell you the truth, I can't find such an article right now -- if you know what I'm talking about, could you point me in the right direction?). Have you considered this issue on hitchwiki.org? I.e., should we stick to one solution for providing on-line mapping of coordinates for hitching places? Has such a solution already been implemented? Ideally, such a solution should be open, editable and transparent. I've added a link to a Google Maps point I have created for Janki, a popular hitching spot in Warsaw. The problem is that the point is not editable by anyone besides me (of course, anyone may simply change the link.) What are your thoughts on this? Also, what would be a more appropriate place to post such questions, so that all the editors may read and comment on the issue? (Still new here).

Pozdraw, Arthur

At the moment, we use to add direct links to www.liftershalte.info to articles, and mark the hitching spots there. Liftershalte.info is based on google maps, created by me and hosted on the same Server as hitchwiki.
I'm planning to add the possibility to include liftershalte-maps directly into hitchwiki-articles, but this doesn't seem to be trivial and I don't have much time at the moment, so it could take a while to implement this.

mauritania

got plenty !! how do i upload them ?? just had a 12 hour shift so my brain is maybe functioning at a less impressive level than it should... i got one uploaded to the Choum page but it's full size and not thumbnailed...

Awesome! I added some formatting to the Choum picture. Check it out, but don't worry too much about that. Usually, if you provide some information about location and such, someone will add it to some pages on this wiki :) and if you add it yourself without formatting, someone (often me, or Philipp) will make it look nice. Video plugins

great ! looks better... hopefully encourage some people to take the train, it's pretty good ! i have a video too if there's any way that can be incorporated...

Hmm, cool. There are MediaWiki plugins for Google Video and YouTube, so MrTweek or I could install them and then you could upload it to those sites and tell us where to find the video :) Guaka 06:52, 18 April 2007 (CEST)

it's here ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdWE1sHOCpY

I will try to get back to this when I'm back in Europe. It's not so easy to install this plugin from China. :/ But maybe MrTweek will fix it sooner :) Guaka 10:43, 24 April 2007 (CEST)

Help!

Are these pages the right pages to talk/message with people on here? Myshkin 16:33, 16 August 2007 (CEST)

Yepp, that's how we do this here ;) --MrTweek 16:48, 16 August 2007 (CEST)
Yeah, it's good for transparency and if someone writes something sensible (which happens sometimes ;) it can directly be copied somewhere else. Guaka 17:41, 16 August 2007 (CEST)

Allowing user stylesheets

Could you add this to LocalSettings.php to allow users to create their own stylesheets?

$wgAllowUserCss = true;

I just enabled it. Hope it works --MrTweeksite, wikitalk 15:48, 16 October 2007 (CEST)

Image background

Hey, do you maybe know how to fix the background of the images of the Template:Potn so that they appear with the same backgroud color like on the main page? (without white borders). platschisite, wikitalk 21:21, 18 January 2008 (CET)

Video Plugin

Hi, I saw you installed the kaltura video plugin. I'm from the Kaltura team and wanted to know if everything went smoothly, if you had any problems and also to collect any feedback you might have. Thx, IdoSet 09:23, 2 June 2008 (CEST)

Hi again, I started a video on my user page - how to hitch-hike safely. I thought it could be a video demo based on the article. Would appreciate your contributions... Thx, IdoSet 09:22, 25 June 2008 (CEST)

Top bar

Hey, in top yellow bar have 'fi' pointing for pt version. Fix to 'pt'

I think MrTweek has fixed it already :) --guakasite, wikitalk 10:56, 4 August 2008 (CEST)
