Finally, why can't we make registration a manual process: people register, provide an email address, and one of the Admins can activate the account. Clicking on something to activate them would take far less time than blocking them and then going via the Special Pages to the Recent Changes Cleanup to hide two entries in the change log...

:As for blocking spammers, these RegExp's should stop quite a few:
:* <nowiki>[A-Z][a-z]*[A-Z][a-z]{2}</nowiki>,
:* <nowiki>[A-Z][a-z]*[A-F][0-9]</nowiki>, and
:* <nowiki>[A-Za-z]*[0-9]{4}</nowiki>
