==Italian version of hitchwiki?==
Hi Guaka, sorry cant really use hitchwiki talks but ill try my best. It make me feel really ashamed every time I open hitchwiki home page that there are plenty of languages, from chinese to hebrew to polish bulgarian and finnish and there is neither an article in italian. Id like to translate it from english according to my "schedule" havent any, and the fact that im continuosly traveling though without a regular internet connection nor personal device (depending on hosts or internet cafes). Simply i have no idea where to start to create a new language section, if i didnt get it wrong u as [[User:Prino|Prino]] are the main developers of this wiki. so id ask ur help:)
trying to spread hitchin culture also among italians that have no idea about english or cant really understand it.
thanks

:Cool. We'll set it up. Actually, usually [[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] does this. I created a ticket on github so it will happen for sure at some point: https://github.com/Hitchwiki/hitchwiki/issues/18. [[User:Guaka|guaka]] ([[User talk:Guaka|talk]]) 16:15, 14 July 2013 (CEST)

== When deleting spammers... ==
Don't leave half the contents of the page, please replace it with just "Spam" [[User:Prino|Prino]] 18:20, 16 August 2012 (CEST)
Please do something about this, there's yet another spam page on the German wiki. [[User:Prino|Prino]] ([[User talk:Prino|talk]]) 20:18, 22 November 2012 (CET)

:Fixed the database issue and deleted two spam pages. Thanks for your alertness! [[User:Guaka|guaka]] ([[User talk:Guaka|talk]]) 15:08, 23 November 2012 (CET)

::Same issue on the Russian one, and there are two spam pages [http://hitchwiki.org/ru/index.php?title=Roth&rcid=1576 Roth] and [http://hitchwiki.org/ru/index.php?title=Kilpatrick217&rcid=1567 Kilpatrick217]. You might also want to check the other languages for the same problem... Also, using the monobook CSS, you cannot delete anything (de and ru, and possibly others) - I'm sorry to say, but I personally loathe the new "Hitchwiki" css... == Floods of spammers ==

If you look at the [http://hitchwiki.org/pl/index.php?title=Specjalna:Ostatnie_zmiany&hidebots=0 Polish recent changes] for 2012-12-24, you will see that there were 12 bogus registrations in just 7 minutes. Can we please do something about this. There must be a way to link them to specific IP addresses, and although it may hit innocent bystandes, maybe we should start blocking more than just the single IP address, and directly go for 255, i.e. aaa.bbb.ccc.*

I might also be useful to remove the ability to register on any of the non-English wiki's - just put up a note that "due to whatever...." people must register on the English one, but can then login on any of the others as well.

Finally, why can't we make registration a manual process: people register, provide an email address, and one of the Admins can activate the account. Clicking on something to activate them would take far less time than blocking them and then going via the Special Pages to the Recent Changes Cleanup to hide two entries in the change log...

:Sorry about Gn0m on the German wiki - stupid username anyway...

:As for blocking spammers, these RegExp's should stop quite a few:
:* <nowiki>[A-Z][a-z]*[A-Z][a-z]{2}</nowiki>,
:* <nowiki>[A-Z][a-z]*[A-F][0-9]</nowiki>, and
:* <nowiki>[A-Za-z]*[0-9]{4}</nowiki>

:They should not give any error message, but just silently ignore the registration. Anything with more than two 'x'es should also be ignored. [[User:Prino|Prino]] ([[User talk:Prino|talk]]) 18:31, 28 November 2012 (CET)
:: Wtf? Again, can you please stop banning users as long as they don't make any problems? I don't care who many dead spamming accounts we have. As long as they don't spam, they don't do any harm at all. Then again, every other week a genuine user is blocked which DOES cause harm. And insulting our users in public for no reason (''stupid username anyway...''') is not exactly a behaviour I want to see here. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]]([[User_talk:MrTweek|talk]]) 23:14, 28 November 2012 (CET)

== CSS: Hitchwiki vs Monobook differences (Bug!) ==

If you go to my [[User:Prino/log/summary|summary table]] page, you will see that it contains three tables. Using the Monobook CSS they all behave as expected, i.e. they can be sorted without any problems. Now switch to the new (and IMHO ever so annoying "New and now washes even whiter") Hitchwiki CSS, and suddenly the tables are no longer sortable, and the nice little sort arrows do not even appear on the country and month tables anymore.

Can someone skilled in the art figure out what's going on? Thanks, [[User:Prino|Prino]] ([[User talk:Prino|talk]]) 21:38, 26 December 2012 (CET)

:I guess some JavaScript is not included with the Hitchwiki theme. I just asked Mikael if he has any idea. If he doesn't I can take a better look at this. [[User:Guaka|guaka]] ([[User talk:Guaka|talk]]) 23:46, 26 December 2012 (CET)
:: Yup sounds like some JS missing. I'll look into it! Prino, lucky we can all choose our favourite templates. ;-) Thanks for noticing it. -[[User:Mikael|Mikael]] ([[User talk:Mikael|talk]]) 23:49, 26 December 2012 (CET)

"Edwardgrahamlii" was one of a series of accounts created by a spambot, and all the names were derived from the same algorithm. That's why I deleted it (someone, maybe Prino, had deleted earlier ones before me). [[User:CRCulver|CRCulver]] ([[User talk:CRCulver|talk]]) 19:49, 18 April 2013 (CEST)

Since a couple of weeks I can no longer log in to any of the other language wiki's, they come back that my password is incorrect, can you have a look at what's going on. == Hitchwiki on the N900 ==

Hi,
i just found the Aard Dictionary and would like to install the offline hitchwiki on a spare Nokia n900 to take to the road. Is dict-hitchwiki.tar.bz2 still available somewhere?
It also appears the gdfl dump files are offline. Will they be available again, and would these also work on Maemo5.
Thanks for putting up this great resource.

cheers, spaak

::Sorry, the file didn't show up. Isn't it possible to create it with current XML dumps? [[User:Guaka|guaka]] ([[User talk:Guaka|talk]]) 17:34, 3 September 2013 (CEST)

:::[[User:Spaak|Spaak]] ([[User talk:Spaak|talk]]) 05:04, 4 September 2013 (CEST) Thanks and sorry, complete noob here. Would the xml files be stored here http://hitchwiki.org/dumps/ ? The page is empty and/or under construction. It would be cool to load the places of the hitchwiki map in either Marble, Monav or any osm-compatible navigation software for offline use. To be clear, I mean the places, rather than the general hh info. Can this be done?
:::: I just repaired the dumps: [[Hitchwiki:Dumps|See here]]. The GFDL ones won't work. We probably lost them. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]]([[User_talk:MrTweek|talk]]) 07:56, 4 September 2013 (CEST)

::::: /dumps was still showing "forbidden". Fixed now :) [[User:Guaka|guaka]] ([[User talk:Guaka|talk]]) 11:07, 4 September 2013 (CEST)

::::: [[User:Spaak|Spaak]] ([[User talk:Spaak|talk]]) 17:13, 4 September 2013 (CEST) Nice! If i were to run the hitchwiki-current-en in Marble, it seems the xml file must be converted to a .pak file first, or? After checking here techbase.kde.org/Projects/Marble/MaemoOfflineRouting* i did some research on how to do this, but no luck. Any pointers appreciated. Thanks again. (*OT: simple sum does not appear, even with all blockers off)

:::::: Not sure about this. Could be good to turn this discussion into a section of [[project:offline]] :) - BTW, another approach would be turning the dump into the dict format and use the dict commandline client. [[User:Guaka|guaka]] ([[User talk:Guaka|talk]]) 10:10, 5 September 2013 (CEST)

:::::::[[User:Spaak|Spaak]] ([[User talk:Spaak|talk]]) Ok. Working on it.

== Reverts ==

I almost never revert people's additions the first time they write in first person or unnecessarily sign their names. I just give them a friendly warning that this isn't how we do things on Hitchwiki. However, this particular editor has ignored two prior requests to avoid mentioning himself, and I think the best policy would be reverting his edits until he realizes that something is wrong. In any event, we need some kind of exhortation in the article edit page to avoid writing in first person. I spend all of my time on Hitchwiki now asking people not to write in first person, I don't have any time left to actually edit articles (a ''lot'' of articles now are in need of a major cleanup). == Spam ==

Hey, Guaka! Thanks for making that change yesterday to unlock the database! I'm glad to be editing again; however, I've been dealing with a constant barrage of spam since then. Was there some sort of anti-spam setting that might have gotten changed? I noticed that IP editors can edit again, and create new pages, which I know wasn't the case before. Or are there any tools to more easily deal with spam? Cheers, [[User:Irningston|Irningston]] ([[User talk:Irningston|talk]]) 21:50, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
