Interesting story about the police. Did not had any of this occasions. Once a driver left me at a traffic police post, and the police offers there even stopped a truck for me going my direction. Where is the city you've been located? In the Golan hights it obviously is not allowed to hitchhike, so the soldiers there forced me into a minibus as well when I was on my way back to Damascus. --Platschi 11:44, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
Where did you find the "standard form" you mentioned? "Northwards" and "North towards" mean drastically different in English. The initial hitch-out directions will usually be altered by chosen routings.
Yay for simplification
I kinda like what you did with Mestia but I wonder if there is really nothing interesting in there? Also, it might be good to check the other contributions by Wrv1983 and let him know what contributions we wanna see and what contributions we don't wanna see... guaka 21:53, 9 October 2010 (CEST)
- That content was moved to the page for Zugdidi, a more appropriate place for it IMHO. I'd rather articles for city X not contain details for how to get there from city Y. That sort of information belongs rather on the article for city Y. CRCulver 22:12, 9 October 2010 (CEST)
Thanks for your update. I changed it again and I hope now it is easy to understand. Too late yesterday ;) --N0id 17:46, 13 October 2010 (CEST)
Hi Chris, saw you removed some spam and I found out you didn't have sysop rights here. You have as of now :) You will see the "block" link next a user's contribution so feel free to block spammers in the future. guaka 14:19, 15 September 2011 (CEST)
I think you removed a bit too much from Vietnam. Also good to wait a bit before removing stuff new people added, I would be discouraged myself if people started removing half of the first things I added to a wiki. It'd be better to rewrite or at least leave the useful bits (such as "Nonsờ has barely ever waited more than 30 minutes with over 50 rides in the country"). And maybe added the removed bits to the talk page? guaka 14:01, 5 October 2011 (CEST)
Replace the "Content was...." with just "Spam", so that as little info as possible remains for search engines. Prino 00:03, 25 December 2011 (CET)
Louisville and USA city additions
Hey CRCulver, I am sorry. I have never hitchhiked Nashville or Louisville. However, with Louisville I could probably look at a bus route map and post how to get to some pretty good and busy spots where one could try to hitchhike. I will make that a project of mine for the next few days. I hope you will post your own experiences in those places once you get to them. Good luck.
I haven't gotten much time to dig into it. Just got a little boat reparation job in Key Largo and have had less time. I've checked out bus routes going through Louisville and the appropriately-numbered Bus 65 will take you up I 65 to where I 65 and I 265 intersect. That'd probably be a good location for hitchhiking as you'd catch all the traffic coming off the circle and heading up towards Indy. But this could be rather complicated if you get dropped off near a bus stop that is far away from the Bus 65 connections. Hope that helps. Good luck!
"Besides the poor English grammar and spelling"
It's good to welcome n00bs. "Besides the poor English grammar and spelling" doesn't seem like the best way to keep folks around. No need to mention that on people's talk pages. I'd rather see 10 weekly new contributors with poor grammar than 1 with flawless English :) Great you're alert on the 1st person issue... keep up the good work! guaka (talk) 12:16, 14 October 2012 (CEST)
never used hitchwiki for talks so dont how actually it works, try to answer here what u wrote me about police. i was not "complaining" cause first i dont like doing it in general and secondly i dont think here is the place for that..sharing experiences and helping others is how i conceive this wiki, thats why i thought it was useful share mine. u r somehow right about my look/appearance, i didnt and dont like tourists in general, and morocco is overcrowded of them, that means (i guess u saw it) every 2 second, wherever, u r asked for rooms, hotel, any other tourist cheating stuff, they can clearly see u r european, especially with green eyes and white face, i was too bothered by that sort of racism (all around the world, everyone but ok..) and thought my djellaba, long beard and good enough arabic were a good choice to keep bothering people away, probably would have been enough answering them politely (as i did in iran, though persian people are so much calmer and insist less than arabs). these were the elements made police classifying me as sure terrorist, take my digitprints, etc when it was enough checking database on computer, asking few questions and let me go. iwas caught 3 times cause was not afraid nor suspicious by people and instead of looking for a spot by myself i always felt safer asking locals. once, the worse, in chaouen, they straightly called police and brought me at station, but others were the security man of the mosque (i asked for a spot for my tent and they offered me the inside school, but responsible for security didnt feel comf without authorization of cops) to call them, or them directly to come by me while hitchin, next to algerian border, with such ridiculous excuses. im sure as one hotel employee said me, main problem was that i was speaking arabic, and almost no foreigner do, that was surprised and made suspicious cops as locals though i thought and still think they are not friendly towards "vagabonds" (dont know what u refer to with that word, saying u dont like them, i used it cause cops called me in that way when i said them i didnt have any stable job but if u refer to freeloaders begging in the streets me neither i like them) that meant, unconventional tourists, hitchhikers especially (bikers normally are more understood). hope to have explained enough (though im never able to do it, especially at pc and in a foreign language). ill update again police section without any reference to personal exp that ill keep as u put it (giving more details). Thanks for the message ..as you may know CS deleted their Wiki .. So I had to decide where to put new info .. I decided on Hitchwiki as it is the one I use and also the new http://couchwiki.org/ which someone has created. The accommodation listed is what I call on my own website : "Accommodation not in guidebook". Of course if it was in the guidebook there would be no point in listing it. In light of budget accommodation being rare in southern Cyprus it's important to share this info. I understand the hitchwiki policy on not being comprehensive on BUDGET accommodation, but I will retrieve the info from past edits and post it in couchwiki. The thing is my own policy is that all the information for Backpackers should be in one place so I will change around I will stop putting updates first into Hitchwiki and rather put them on Couchwiki. My attempt is not to list all accommodation, but rather list accommodation for hitch-hikers & backpackers when it is difficult for them to find it , as guidebooks like Lonely Planet are now focussed on more expensive options. Coincidentally I got an email from them thanking me for the info, right at the same time as yours arrived.Stewgreen (talk)
There's no need to keep all information in just one place. Hitchwiki has always tried to support the ecosystem of libre wiki projects when it comes to budget travel information beyond hitchhiking. For example, many Hitchwiki articles link to Trashwiki for dumpster-diving tips. Wikivoyage is the major community-driven project for tourism info, so by adding your accommodation listings there would help the project out, and the Hitchwiki article could link to the corresponding Wikivoyage article. "
I already linked to that article. However it's accommodation info is useless and the page confusing in general. If there was a good wiki for budget accommodation I would link to that, but there isn't.
you say There's no need to keep all information in just one place."
I say , it would be great if all the info for basic budget travel could be found in one place. - There is a need for basic travel information like the way Lonely Planet used to be when it was subtitled on a shoestring. Wikivoyage is not that. It seems to me that Hitchwiki should take on that role rather just be a specialist STRICTLY hitch info site .. already most of the info on the wiki is not to do with hitching and can be found elsewhere There is no point in me putting my hot accommodation tips on Wikivoyage, cos it is not focussed on budget travel. .. It would be great if you could tell me where the page is which states Hitchwikis policy on listing accommodation Stewgreen (talk) 12:58, 16 April 2013 (CEST)
-I think i know what I am talking about.
- Actually I led the seminar on Freecamping at Hitchgathering last year, and last night like most nights I freecamped. In 77 days in Cyprus I have freecamped most nights and only 3 nights have I paid more than €5 to sleep. Also the Dutch guy led a workshop on travelling on €1 a day .. and in 23 years travelling I average €10/day total spending. I think we agree that places which are especially cheap or free should be listed It is just a question where we draw the line. There were 2 free places a €4 place and 2 €5 places on that list you deleted all not mentioned in the guidebooks. I would say it's good to mention the cheapest place in town, cos that really helps the traveller, they know to move on quickly to next place or free camp. Their is a strong connection between hitchwiki and shoestring travel. (if there was a shoestring travel wiki it would heavily overlap hitchwiki)
- I am not minded to start editing that Wikivoyage as it's a mess ..try getting to the info for North Cyprus from their main Cyprus page.
- BTW if you search Hitchwiki for hostel is has hundreds of mentions of them .. will it be a project to delete them all ?
Hi since there NOT YET an official policy on mentioning places to sleep I am starting a discussion over on the Google group https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!forum/hitchwiki I invite you to come with us all and discuss it there ..may I post your words also ?
New thoughts after sleeping
- What info do we keep in the Wiki ?
STUFF THAT IS USEFUL TO HITCHERS ..that is helpful
- What stuff do we delete ?
- stuff that is NOT USEFUL or DUPLICATE easily found elsewhere
The NO DUPLICATION rule is important but shouldn’t rule over the give helpful info rule
so if it doesn’t exist elsewhere or it’s difficult to find then keep it in the wiki
CRCulver misunderstood me he said ”Hitchwiki is not meant to include exhaustive listings of paid accommodation”, but all I did was post basically the cheapest known place for each region.
You don’t post the Hilton cos that is not useful to hitcher. In a country where cheap places are not common then it is USEFUL to a hitcher to know the cheapest place cos
- if it is a cold stormy day then he has the option to check in to a place for 1 night to do his washing ..and if the cheapest place is $40 he knows to look for a secret room etc.
and I still think it good to keep SLEEP CHEAP TIP LIST on a separate page so that it doesn’t clog the main listing.
as I said lets talk on the group

Sneaking and busking
Hi Cristopher, sorry for late reply, never check it often the talks here plus it stopped to notify me via mail the changes don't know why so took even longer before i saw it and of course longer before i answered it. Anyways, i saw you removed it already so i guess no problem.:) . I apologize for writing useless and disreputing things to your (may i dare to say our? it's not mine but i feel like this as well) project. I misunderstood and misinterpretated the section any useful info, and watching your talks i can see im not the only one..im sorry but must agree with stewgreen that "It seems to me that Hitchwiki should take on that role rather just be a specialist STRICTLY hitch info site .. already most of the info on the wiki is not to do with hitching and can be found elsewhere" but this is a personal opinion, and i don't care being right etc. As for moroccan caughts or any other disagreeing i think the best way is to find a shared solution, and in this case writing all this stuff on nomadwiki seems to me the best one (even though hitchwiki as such a bigger audience and at least for sleeping and blackriding i think it should keep its info) I guess you also erased my part on Pamukkale more than 1 year ago and i guess the same should be done for Efes (http://hitchwiki.org/en/Selcuk) (just did it) being even more exhaustive than stonehenge. Im moving all this stuff on nomadwiki, if i hadnt misunderstood this too, there should be ok with illegal things (still curious about writing about shoplifting what do they think..) So nothing, just again sorry and ill write on hitchwiki only things related on hitchhiking, sleeping maybe also, though once also a spot i had written in copenhagen had been erased and couldnt see the reason..don't want to rewrite again, just save on mail what i write and copy it on other wikis.. cheers.
