West, North (Bitburg, Luxembourg, Belgium, France)
Take the bus to Fachhochschule and exit at the terminus. There is enough space to place yourself, uphill is the motorway to Luxembourg and the road straight (B 51) is heading to Bitburg (and from there on the 60 direction Belgium).

To travel in direction of France, Spain, Portugal but also north towards Belgium , Netherlands and the UK your best bet is
from the gasstation "Aire de Berchem", 58km away just below Luxemburg City. This is one of the biggest gasstations in Europe and has a lot of long distance traffic!
As hitching out of Trier can be difficult the best option is to get to Wasserbillig (a bordertown in Luxemburg) and take a train from there to Luxemburg and then to Berchem for 2 Euros! Trains from Wasserbillig leave twice an hour around 13 past and 28 past and take about 30/40(for the later)minutes, from there you can catch a connection South to Berchem four times an hour, the ride only takes 6minutes.. Here you will have to walk a few minutes towards the highway and cross it to get onto the right service station. To get to Wasserbillig hitching is the easiest though ;there is almost always a ticket controller on the trains from Trier to Luxemburg and the tickets cost 10€.You can try hitching anywhere along "Luxemburgerstraße" on the westbank of the Mosel but a fruitfull spot has been the Busstop on the height of Eisenbahnstraße in Trier Euren ,you can easily walk here or take City Bus 2 or 3.
From Wasserbillig you can also walk 3km along the road to get to the highwayonramp , but many cars stop before Luxemburg City
Boat hitchhiking and Train hopping
You will find a cargo railway station north of Trier in Pfalzel. Maybe you will be lucky here (not tested).
You will notice many Barges on the Mosel River. You may have a chance asking at the watergate (right now it is under construction and inaccessible Dec 2012). It is on the left Mosel side between the camping site and the industrial area in Zewen. Remember: hitchhiking a barge is very slow. Maybe you can also ask at the small yacht club. It is south of the Watergate.

Bus
Trier has a good bus network, which will be the first option for getting around. Due to the buses being relatively expensive (EUR 2.45 for a single ticket) walking may be a good option, because Trier isn't this big (you can walk from the very north to the very south in 1 hour).
There is a regular bus connection to Luxembourg served by Voyages Emile Weber (line 118) which is a cheap option and costs only EUR 7 for a . With the day ticket which you can also use for the local buses in Luxembourg City.
Trier Verteilerkreis is a stop of the regular bus line between Metz <-> Thionville <-> Luxembourg <-> Trier <-> Hahn Airport. The bus has to be booked in advance at flibco.com and is quite expensive, unless you book well in advance. Don't take this, because it is no problem to hitch from Verteilerkreis to Hahn, or from the Fachhochschule spot to Luxembourg/Metz.
Train
Using the train served by Deutsche Bahn is expensive. From Trier you will find a line to Luxembourg, Koblenz and to Saarbrücken / Kaiserslautern. You will definitely (at least at daytime) be faster hitchhiking than using regional trains.
If going through Luxembourg you might be interested in taking trains once you have crossed the border as there is a 2hour ticket that gets you about anywhere for 2€.

Hospitality exchange networks
There are many students living in Trier. So Trier has a great hospitality exchange network community. You will definitely find accommodation via couchsurfing.org or hospitalityclub.org one of the well know hospitality exchange networks, but it can be difficult during the semester vacations. Maybe you can also try to contact Quarim.
Camping
In Trier you will find a camping side on the left side of the Mosel Riverin Trier West. It is 6,25€ for an adult + 4,30€ for a tent. There is also a Another camping site in Igel which is EUR 4 for a tent and EUR 4 for an adult per night. The camping side located in Igel is about , 12km from the city centerTrier.
