Tennessee

Tennessee is one of the 50 states of the United States.

Tennessee and most of the southern United States is fairly conservative, so, as always, being respectful is a must for any hitchhiker. Most of the people down here are some of the nicest folks around. The few that aren't are everywhere, though, not just in Tennessee.

Musicians are greatly appreciated here. Street performing, especially country-related, is a great way to generate revenue for your hitchhiking experience. Carrying a sign is alright, as long as it's humorous. People respond much better to a sign that has personality than despair.

Sales tax in Tennessee is very high - almost ten percent. That means in general, money is tighter than usual. Luckily, there are plenty of Dollar Generals, Wal-Marts, and gas stations to circumvent this cost.

Tennessee is divided into three sections- West, Middle, and East. The "capitals" of these three regions are, in order: Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville. Remember that for determining where you need to go.

One thing that makes Tennessee appeal to hitchhikers is that the state has the largest amount of highways, bypasses, and interstates; surrounded by 8 states, Tennessee is a crossroads to the entire south, and as such your options for traveling from there are greatly improved.

55-8-139. Pedestrians soliciting rides or business. (a) No person shall stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride or employment from the occupant of any vehicle.
