This page covers the perceived danger from other humans. How about creating separate pages which deal with extreme climates, such as hitching in the extreme cold in Winter - eg Russia, Northern China, Canada, Scandinavia? There must be people on this site who are well aware of how to protect themselves when stuck outside in this weather. Topics might include sleeping outside, warming up, how to set up camp. What to buy beforehand to prepare for this. Similarly, another page detailing hitching in very hot conditions, like in the desert, would be very helpful.--haggismn 18:47, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi N0id. Thank you for your contributions to Hitchwiki. Please make sure to include an edit summary with every edit. Please provide one before saving your changes to an article, as the summaries are quite helpful to people browsing an article's history. :Hey. Thank You for your contribution. As you might have noticed, hitchwiki is not wikipedia. Usually, we do not need and usually don't have references in our articles. True enough, I could have provided an edit summary, however, I considered your "reference" such an obvious attempt to promote your website (which, even though related to hitchhiking has a big dollar sign behind it) that the removal should be self-explanatory.  --N0id (talk) 12:19, 29 June 2013 (CEST)

My mistake to assume that it was your website, but since your account wasn't used for a couple of years and then a single small edit contained that fishy link it was suspicious. Let it be then. Cheers, --N0id (talk) 14:09, 4 July 2013 (CEST)

Women hitchhiking

Is the following correct? To me this seems to be an assumption of the contributor. It is not in line with results from the German study for example (Anhalterwesen und Anhaltergefahren).

""For women, hitchhiking seems to be more risky. But it is not really. Many men are reporting the same degree of violation as women. If most reported cases of murder or rape of hitchhikers involve women hitchhiking alone, it is because men are less likely to report rapes , and murders are not getting the label of "hitch-hiking-murders" as often with male victims.""

Wechner article and government studies

There is a very good article about then safety while hitchhiking from Bernd Wechner: http://bernd.wechner.info/Hitchhiking/Suite101/Article/?22 Maybe we should link it here. Unfortunately I couldn't find the report from the BKA that Bernds article is based on. Anyone has a copy? --MrTweek 13:32, 22 June 2007 (CEST)

No copy here. That study is still available in some specialized libraries in Germany and Belgium. It's nice enough to know it exists, owning does not really make my life better. --Fverhart 14:40, 22 June 2007 (CEST)

There is another study from the 70s from california: http://www.digihitch.com/sections-viewarticle-43.html --MrTweek 14:20, 25 June 2007 (CEST)

I have both of them, and I webified the entire California one - It's in Bernd's hands now to be put on his website. If you're still looking for any of them, just drop me a line. --Perilisk 20:42, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Pepper Spray, CS Gas

I do not agree with pepper spray. If you spray it in the closed car, it will affect you too. I think it just make things worse. Mirto

I was told about pepper foam by a driver once as an counter-argument for my defense for not having pepperspray. The foam would have the advantage not to be so volatile in a closed environment such as a car, but I have no experience in the matter. He recommended using >10,000 BTU foam.
