I heard the other day from someone from France that these days hitchhiking is forbidded?? Never experienced problems but it would be a good thing to keep in mind Robino 14:19, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't believe that is so. I've never heard of it being against the law, and even Lonely Planet doesn't heavily discourage it. I've had many police vehicles pass me and was never even given a second look. Zactalk 14:42, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
It's forbidden to walk along the highway and you might even get a ride from the cops. Happened to me once, but I didn't get a fine and they dropped me off at a gas station 10 kms further away. :) GuakaTalkCS 00:05, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

As far as i know, there is no prohibitions about hitching in france - except on the restricted access roads, i.e. expressways and motorways. Péages are also considered part of the motorway, and normally one is not allowed to sollicit ride there. But this is not really enforced - since 2004 it happened to me only once to be told to get off the tollbooth and ask for a ride on the parking nearby (what was difficult because there was no services except toilets...). But the risk is relatively low.--Daniel 12:25, 17 December 2006 (CET)

It's also oficialy illegal to hitchhike on petrol station on the highway, but Police don't care. But there is only a small region (i don't remember if it's in the north or south of Lyon)where Police will give you a lift to the next toll, because 1 year ago one hitchhiker die crashed by a car on a petrol station, for this reason police aply the law and don't allow people hitchhiking on such places. In this region since this accident, the local authoritise made official hitchhiking spots on normal road, but i don't have much information about it. .--[[User:caminosdelmundo|caminosdelmundo]
