Talk:Budapest

I'm interested on how it's best to pass Budapest without entering the city using the route M5->M0->M1. Any advice is most welcome. TruckThor 23:55, 23 April 2007 (CEST)

I guess this is quite difficult, because most of the traffic goes just into town. But public transport in Budapest is not so bad, so just try to get dropped somewhere in the west of the town and then take a bus tu Budaörs, where you will easily get a ride at the gas station (you can find the exact position at liftershalte.info). You probably won't loos too much time this way. --MrTweek 08:40, 24 April 2007 (CEST)
Does public transport run at night too? If not, would it be safe to cross the city on foot, from the M5 entrance to Budaörs? TruckThor 16:24, 24 April 2007 (CEST)
At night there is only little public transport. The city is quite safe, I walked through it a few times at night, no problems. But it is also very big, so, you depending on where you get dropped, you might walk for hours. I think all you can do, is hoping to find someone who takes the M0 to the west of the town. --MrTweek 18:46, 24 April 2007 (CEST)
Or, I suppose I can get dropped off at the exit ramp off the M5 onto M0. Is hitchhiking on motorway ramps illegal in Hungary? TruckThor 20:32, 24 April 2007 (CEST)

hitching out westwards

note to self: clean this part up

I just wanted to add a warning about hitchhiking west from the ring road. I was dropped off at noon yesterday by my third consecutive truck driver from Bucharest at the first petrol station on the Budapest ring road before the way west toward Linz and Munich. I did not get a ride until after 7pm despite trying two petrol stations with restaurants and walking along the motorway with a sign for hours each. I do not know if all Budapest or Hungary is as bad. Talking to Hungarian drivers in petrol stations was not easy as they seem to try very hard to avoid eye contact. — Hippietrail 16:24, 16 September 2010 (CEST)

I had similar experiences with leaving Budapest once (gave up after some hours). The second try in the same direction went very good. In the countryside, hitchhiking went perfectly well though. --MrTweek 16:52, 16 September 2010 (CEST)
