Together with Viña del Mar and other towns it creates a conurbation of more than 900,000 inhabitants. Locals call the city Valpo.
== Hitching Hitchhiking out ===== Going North towards La Serena or East towards Mendoza (Argentina)===Take a From Avenida Errazuriz in Valparaíso, for example near the metro station Bellavista take any micro (mini bus ) that goes to La Ligua in Valparaiso or in AvQuilpue, there's plenty of them and it costs around 600 pesos. Libertad Tell the driver that you want to get off near the Puente Lusitania (Lusitania Bridge) in Viña del Mar. Go to the other side of the bridge and turn left (east) and ask . After 500m you will see a roundabout where motorway begins. Hitch there with a sign. A lot of the driver traffic will be heading southeast to let Santiago by motorways 62 and 5, so you in the can make a sign "peaje el melónPeaje Llay Llay" just before , which is a huge toll plaza located on the tunnel and like 10 minutes after Panamerican Higway 5, twenty km south from La Calera. From there you can hitch either south to Santiago, east to San Felipe, then just wait in the tool gate for a truck Los Andes and Mendoza or a carnorth to La Serena.
=== Going South Southeast towards Santiago===Take a Get to Avenida Argentina. You can either walk from the historic centre (30 minutes) or take any micro (mini bus in Valparaiso ) that goes to Placilla Congreso or Terminal de Buses. At the southern end of the avenue there is a beginning of the motorway 68 with a COPEC petrol station. It's a perfect spot for hitching. Make a sign. There will be no trucks, but it's easy to find a lift with cars and they usually go to the centre of Santiago.  Thumbing it, I got a ride from this gas station in Viña less than five minutes. --Keith Another option is to Placilla take a micro (406mini bus) in Valparaíso to Placilla and leave the bus in the entrance of placillato Placilla, then walk like 500 meters to the last gas petrol station , which is COPEC (copec - there are 3 gas stationthree petrol stations in a row) always walking neart near the highway and after . After the copec COPEC there is a curve were where all the trucks leave the city and it is very easy to catch a truck over there, not one. Not all the trucks go to Santiago so try to take one to going straight there or get off at the last toll plaza before Santiago, called Peaje Lo Prado and leave the truck catch another lift. == Hitchhiking in some gas station ==If you happen to be going to Valparaíso and your driver is going to Viña del Mar, your fastest option is to get off in RUTA 5 (Placilla located 12 km south direction) after Americo Vespucio from Valpo. From there you can take a micro (another highwaymini bus)going to the city centre. It should cost around 600 pesos. The bus stop is located on the side of the motorway near the pedestrian bridge over the road.
