Hitchhiking out
North towards Junin de los Andes on RN40
Many tourists stop their itinerary in San Martin de los Andes, only few continue to Junin de los Andes, mostly travellers which go back to Buenos Aires by car. Still, RN40 remains trafficked enough to get a hitch within a reasonable time.
South towards Villa La Angostura and Bariloche on RN40
This stretch of RN40 has loads of tourist traffic. Try to catch other tourists which will let you stop once in a while. After two thirds of the way, there is a turnoff to Villa Traful on RP65, which is a more remote and as scenery route as the popular RN40. However, travelling here will make you miss most of the road part at Lago Nahuel Huapi. Be careful!: there is no phone coverage in the entire stretch from San Martín de los Andes to Villa la Angostura. That means approximately 100 km with no signal.
