San José is the capital of Costa Rica.

Hitching Out

You can basically try it a lot closer to the city than the hitchiking spots fabzgy mentioned. The Panamerican Highway passes right through the city. For long distance trips fabzgy recommends the spots on the map because there most of the Valle Central traffic is filtered out. <map lat='9.94720897733' lng='-84.0993118286' zoom='11' view='0' float='right'/>

South towards San Isidrio, Panama

If you want to go in direction San Isidrio or Panama take a bus from San José to Cartago (300 C) and ask the bus driver to drop you off at the peage station. Alternatively you can take a bus to Tres Rios and get of at the TerraMall. Behind this huge mall is the Peage station. Option two might be easier.

North-West towards Puntarenas, Liberia, Nicaragua

For the direction Puntarenas, Liberia or Nicaragua take a bus to Alajuella and drop of at the peage station or at the airport. Should be allright to hitchhike out from there.

East towards Puerto Limon, Caribbean Coast, Puerto Viejo

Go to the Terminal Caribe, from there 100 meters north, the next to the right and after 120 m you arrive at the spot.

Public transport

Public Transport is quite cheap and brings you almost everywhere in the Valle Central. The busses who are heading to the suburbs and surrounded cities of San José costs normaly less then 300 C and departuring without timetable but most likely every 5 - 15 minutes.
