San José is the capital of Costa Rica.

Hitchhiking out

It is possible to hitch from close to the city centre, as the Panamerican Highway passes right through the city. For long distance trips one can try the spots on the map because there most of the Valle Central traffic is filtered out.

South towards San Isidrio, Panama

If you want to go in direction San Isidrio or Panama take a bus from San José to Cartago (300 C) and ask the bus driver to drop you off at the peage station. Alternatively you can take a bus to Tres Rios and get of at the TerraMall. Behind this huge mall is the Peage station. Option two might be easier.

North-West towards Puntarenas, Liberia, Nicaragua

For the direction Puntarenas, Liberia or Nicaragua take a bus to Alajuela and get off at the peage station or at the airport. It should be alright to hitchhike from there.

East towards Puerto Limon, Caribbean Coast, Puerto Viejo

Go to the Terminal Caribe, from there 100 meters north. At the next intersection take a right and after 120 m you arrive at the hitchhiking spot.

Public transport

Public transport is quite cheap and brings you almost everywhere in the Valle Central. The buses who are heading to the suburbs and surrounding cities of San José normally costs less then 300 C. They depart without a timetable but usually every 5-15 minutes.

Sleep

Check the very active San Jose Couchsufing group.
