Salem (Oregon)

Salem is the capital city of the state of Oregon. There is a state penitentiary in Salem, so many drivers feel unsafe picking up hitchhikers, for fear that they are criminals. The easiest way, therefore, to find a ride out of Salem is by asking drivers at gas stations near highway entrances and exits, rather than trying to thumb alongside the highway.
