Potsdam is the capital of the federal state Brandenburg. It is located 20 kilometers southwest of Berlin.

Hitchhiking out

Potsdam is home to the first official hitchhiking spot in Germany. It is located on B2 'Leipziger Straße' ('Michendorfer Allee') next to the Potsdam DB main train station - which leads to 'Rastanlage Michendorf' on 'Berliner Ring' (E 30/ A 10).

To reach Rastanlage Michendorf on 'Berliner Ring' (E 30/ A 10) via A 115, take Suburban Train S7 to 'Nikolassee' Station (four stops), leave the DB station in the direction of 'Wannsee', walk along 'Borussen Straße' and 'Spanische Alee' (only two minutes) to the petrol station as well as rest-area Grunewald West. From there it should be very-very easy to reach 'Berliner Ring' and 'Rastanlage Michendorf'. Build a cardboard sign with 'Ring', 'Michendorf' or even your final destination on it. If you plan to go eastward into Poland or westward to 'Ruhrgebiet', go to 'Michendorf' first. The lift 'Spanische Allee' - 'Michendorf' should not take longer than ten minutes. An alternative to reach Michendorf is to take DB regional train RB22 from 'Potsdam Hauptbahnhof' to 'Schönefeld Airport' to get off at 'Michendorf Station'. The walk from the station takes around 20 minutes. There are three supermarkets on the way to the Autobahn.

If you want to travel to Hamburg, Copenhagen or Rostock from Potsdam: Take the suburban train (S-Bahn) S8/S4/S85 to the stop 'Pankow-Heinersdorf' close to 'Prenzlauer Promenade' on B109. From the traffic light close to the Autobahn on-ramp (still on B109) it normally only takes minutes until you can find a driver. A 114 leads close after Berlin on 'Berliner Ring' (A 10) which leads after ten minutes to the Autobahn Berlin-Hamburg/Berlin-Rostock. The way here can take one hour from Potsdam as Pankow is in the north of Berlin.
