<map lat='39.5' lng='-8' zoom='6' view='0' float='right' height='400' country='Portugal' /> Portugal is a member state of the European Union as well as the Schengen Agreement. Hitching in Portugal is quite easy. As in any other country, you just have to find the right places to do it. It's a country in Europe, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Spain.

Hitchhiking

Hitchhiking in Portugal is not difficult, but it is important to find a got spot where cars can stop easily and you are protected from the sun. As alternative to hitchhiking you can use the busses from rede esspressos for overland travels. The railway network is not in a good state, it is slow and there are only two lines.

People

Most portuguese people are friendliy, helpful and open minded. During the summer, especially the coastline is overrunned by tourists. Thats maybe why the local people are a bit nerved and stressed, especially if they do not earn money with the tourists. It can be, that people then seem to be ruthless and loud. In Portugal people are easy going and sometimes slow. Everything needs its time, so you will proably have to wait for a little while. Overlandbusses are usually a bit late.

Eat and Drink

You make a good deal if you buy on the local markets where you can expect good quality for low prices. Fruits, vegatables, fish and meat have mostly good prices. Expensive is cheese, fruit juice, haribo and chocolate.

In restaurants you will always get bread, chesse, butter and olives without being asked. This will cost extra. As starter there is a soup usual and as main course grilled fish or grilled meat with rice or chips. Portuguese people often eat grilled stuff or stew. The meals are mostly simple.
