Philadelphia is a large city on the Southeastern corner of Pennsylvania.

Trains

There are three major railways in Philadelphia: Amtrak, NJ Transit, and SEPTA.

Amtrak

Amtrak trains leave constantly from 30th Street Station, located at 30th and Market streets. A large yard is very close by as well.

NJ Transit

NJ Transit meets the Philadelphia subway at 8th and Market Station (this is the PATCO Speedline.) Philadelphia is also on the NJT Atlantic City line--this stop is in 30th Street Station.

SEPTA

If you're hitching out of Philadelphia, SEPTA is a good place to start. SEPTA (South East Penn. Transit Authority) services Philadelphia's local buses, subways, trolleys, and trains.

The buses and trolleys are nearly impossible to hitch on and, for the most part, remain within in the city anyway. The subway is good and cheap if you need to get around the city, but are also difficult to hitch.

However, the trains are fairly easy to hitch. You can get out of the city in most any direction via SEPTA's regional rail train. Most of these trains don't check tickets until after you're on; if tickets are checked pre-boarding, just wait for the next train. Conductors come around after each stop checking for new fares, so unless you buy a ticket you'll be asked to get off at the next stop if you don't pay up on-board. However, many passengers leave their tickets on-board, so finding one before the conductor comes through is possible.
