There is amazing huge archaeological cite of Old Zoroastrianiс Panjakent in southern part of town. Cite is located on the hill. Dated by 5-7th century. Available in 15 minutes afoot from center.

Panjakent is a city in Tajikistan, located on the road from Ayni to Samarkand.

N.B. that since 2011 border controls to Samarkand are only for locals.

There is a border control point located 10 km away from town. Take a minibus there from the market and hitch from the border. Traffic is low.

The Border crossing between Panjakent and Samarkand has the most friendly staff among the Tajik-Uzbek border checkpoints.
