If you plan to hitch in Mongolia, it´s good to know that drivers expect to be paid. Before entering the car bargain for the price and expect a full-packed-car, packed with amazingly friendly people!

...and expect flat tyres overheating jeeps and not much more than 100km a day. camping is great here.

You can get free rides! one big problem is make them understand that and understand them. Mongolia. just some hundreds of km paved road from Ulan Bator (UB) in some directions an that s it. no roads, no signs. the trunk roads out of UB are paved and reasonably trafficked.

so be careful if you walk out of the cities, along the "roads" that you don t get lost. and take water with you. confusingly, names of cities equal names of states, so make sure city and state match.

you can get free rides! one big problem is make them understand that and understand them. form UB to zamyn yyd (china border) it is not too difficult. the "road" (half of the way down is paved) stays close to the transmongolian railway and gives you security not to die thirsty. i got a lift by the great defektoskop train.

the far west: Bayan Oelgi, is very hard to hitch. took me 2 weeks from the Russian border in bayan oelgi to UB. Chinese visa is easy in UB, Russian is not so easy-like in any other place.
