Minneapolis, the largest of the Twin Cities, the 14th-largest metropolitan area in the United States, containins approximately 3.8 million residents. Minneapolis lies on both banks of the Mississippi River, just north of the river's confluence with the Minnesota River, and adjoins Saint Paul, the state's capital. The city is abundantly rich in water, with twenty lakes and wetlands (most of which you can swim in), the Mississippi River, creeks and waterfalls, many connected by parkways in the Chain of Lakes and the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway. Locals call it the 'City of Lakes.'

Minneapolis is a traveler-oriented town. Evidence the Hard Times Cafe ([1]), a crustpunk diner where you're sure to see hitching and trainhopping folk.

Hitching Out

North towards Duluth (via I35 highway)

Hitching shouldn't be difficult near the university. If you're headed north, stand on the southwest corner of the intersection of SE 4th St and 9th Ave (?--not sure name of road that runs parallel and west of 35W). Cars stopped at the light will have time to pick you up.

South towards Northfield / Owatonna / Albert Lea / Clear Lake

Take public transit down to Burnsville Center then walk south to Crystal Lake Road. Here the two branch interstates of 35E and 35W join back up again and are just interstate 35.

Signs indicating destinations in the major rural towns along the way greatly increase your chances of getting a ride.

If you want more traffic, further south in Lakeville is a better bet for people driving longer distances.

Avoid Faribault if continuing further on south as the on-ramps are mostly devoid of traffic and not really suited for hitchhiking.

Northwest towards St. Cloud / Little Falls / Detroit Lakes / Fargo (via #10 highway)

You could take the I94 northwest of Minneapolis towards Fargo, but keep to the on-ramps or sign directly for Fargo. For a more hassle free option, hitch via the local highway #10. Ask busdrivers to get you to the Anoka suburb, then to be let off at the Anoka community college. The #10 runs adjacent, with a road shoulder nearby.
