Madrid [1] is the capital of Spain. Madrid has a very extensive and inexpensive well-connected metro system that can help you get in and out of the city.

South, toward Córdoba, Algeciras, and Morocco

Near the metro station "Ciudad de los Ángeles" is a petrol station that is a fairly good spot to start from. This same road (Av. de Andalucia) leads South, toward the entrance to the Autovía del Sur, which goes to Córdoba and Algeciras. Unfortunately, along Av. de Andalucia, there is no emergency stopping lane, and thus, cars have no space to stop and pull over for hitchhikers (even at the bus stops!). However, there are many traffic lights that allow vehicles the opportunity to slow down and stop. Not far from the entrance to the autovía (maybe only about 5 or 10 km down) is another petrol station. So, you don´t even hypothetically need to find a ride that is going ver far from this point because you can simlpy ask to be dropped at the next petrol station on the Autovía del Sur.

North East, towards Zaragoza and Barcelona

Hitchhiking between Madrid and Barcelona is fairly easy. Go to Guadalajara, you can go by train (cercanias) or by bus, it is 50 km away and costs 4 euros. Then take a bus to Taracena, it is a small village a few km from Guadalajara, from there you can get to a petrol station next to a bar restaurant, already on the highway towards Zaragoza and Barcelona. If people are not going too far, try to get a lift to the next gas station, 15 km away, much bigger and with many trucks.
