There are two bus stops on Mannerheiminkatu (road 12) between Vesijärvenkatu/Uudenmaankatu and Iso-Paavolankatu. The first of which is a better location to hitchhike from due to it being close to a junction where cars will be travelling at a slower speed.

From the centrum of Lahti, walk 3km to a motorway ramp of road #4. Walk north on Aleksanterinkatu and Karjalankatu to a T-crossroad. walk 200m left (Kouvola direction) and by a small crossroad. Hitch-hike from the second crossroad on a ramp. The walk takes about 30min.
 +
After Lahti there is a gib Motorest called Tähtihovi. Make sure you will get there, if your ride is going to Heinola. Otherwise you may have to walk through the whole city. There are a lot of cops around Heinola, too.
 +
Or if you are going to Kuhmo or Kajaani (or anywhere at the road #5) you can also try the Hartwall factory. It's behind the T-crossroad (mentioned above). Around 1pm there are a lot of beer trucks going north.

Walk about 2km to a bus stop from the railway station. Next to the station under the railway there is a road called Vesijärventie that goes to Launee. Walk on it to south about 20min until you see a McD's and a K-rauta (hardware store). Next to K-rauta there is a bus stop, which is a good hithc-hiking place. you can also try to find a bus from Kauppatori that goes to that bus stop.

Walk from the marketplace on a road that goes by the conservatory and by the bus station on al hill. This road is the old road to Helsinki (if you want experience the real country life :). From the top of the hill there goes a road down to right, it leads to Tampere. Walk along it about 5-10min, over the railroad and over a walking road. There is a traffic light next to a bus stop, where you can usually catch a ride to at least Hollola.
 +
The road going to Riihimäaki goes left right after Hollola. This road takes you also to Turku.
 +
Later there is a chance to take a turn to Hämeenlinna and Jämsä
