Hitchhiking from Setubal (one hour by train from Lisboa) to Villa d'Obispo is easy in the summer time, just follow the coastal roads (N261, N120, N268). People stop easily, because there are no bus lines, so they often take local hitchhikers and also because there are a lot of surfers who readily pick up hitchhikers, too. Expect to divide your itinerary into a number of shorter rides, because drivers aren't usually going very far.

Hitching from the center of Lagos will be hard. I have tried it many times, and it seems that the only good way is to walk on the main avenue all the way pass a dozen crossroads until you get to that big roundabout that goes to the highway towards [[Faro] and [[Lisbon]].

Walking from the center of Lagos along that long road will take approx 30minutes. You can try and hitch on the way, but you'll probably have to walk until there. No sign is required as people who stop always ask you where you are going even if you have a sign.

On the highway from Lagos to Spain there are not many cars going and most of them are going just localy so it can take you a lot of time to leave Portugal. On the highway there are 4 gas stations in Portugal(on the third station you can dumpster dive some nice baguetes and snadwitches) and some more in Spain. I expected that it will take me only few hours to get to Sevilla but finaly I spent 2 nights on the way! But I was there in december, maybe in summer it could be better.

Hitchhiking out

North towards Lisbon/Porto and East towards Faro and Spain

From the main avenue, head east towards the main bus station. Walk past the bus station and turn right at the roundabout. Keep following this road and you should end up on the N125, which leads to the A22. If you continue on this road, there are a few good hitching spots, otherwise you can walk about 1 - 2 kilometres farther and you will reach a petrol station. Another point to start your walk to the petrol station could be the harbour, with a supermarket north of it right beside the N125.

Sputz tried hitching here in various spots for one hour and managed to obtain a ride from the petrol station all the way to Faro. In summer 2019 Fáinleog managed to hitch from the N125 to Faro/Algarve Airport after missing his bus. He was picked up and dropped off three times. The third driver picked Fáinleog up on the A22 and said he was lucky because not many stop on this major road. Fáinleog made his flight. This also is the best route to go north, towards Lisbon and even Porto.

People stop easily, because there are no bus lines, so they often take local hitchhikers and also because there are a lot of surfers who readily pick up hitchhikers, too. Expect to divide your itinerary into a number of shorter rides, because drivers aren't usually going very far.

West towards Sagres, Villa Do Bispo

Hitching from the center of Lagos will be hard. I have tried it many times, and it seems that the only good way is to walk on the main avenue all the way passing a dozen crossroads until you get to that big roundabout that goes to the motorway towards Faro and Lisbon. Walking from the center of Lagos along that long road will take approx 30minutes. You can try and hitch on the way, but you'll probably have to walk until there. No sign is required as people who stop always ask you where you are going even if you have a sign.

To Sevilla, Spain

On the highway from Lagos to Spain there are not many cars going and most of them are going just localy so it can take you a lot of time to leave Portugal. On the highway there are 4 gas stations in Portugal(on the third station you can dumpster dive some nice baguetes and snadwitches) and some more in Spain. I expected that it will take me only few hours to get to Sevilla but finaly I spent 2 nights on the way! But I was there in december, maybe in summer it could be better.

Where to eat

Restaurante Bar Inna at Rua da Oliveira 52 has a selection of daily specials for €5 each. Portions are good making it the best-value restaurant in the centre. The staff are friendly and many buskers eat here.
