The Hrebenne-Rava Ruska border crossing joins Poland near Zamość and Ukraine near Lviv on the E372 road.

Walking through this border is not allowed, however it is not that difficult to find a lift across. Before the first police checkpoint, you must ask the drivers of the waiting cars for a lift through. Every driver has to show a document to the officer at the first checkpoint, so it can also be a good idea to make him your friend, because he could help you finding a lift. Unfortunately, long waits of up to 8 hours are common at this border, so even once you get into a car, you must be patient.

Somewhatofftheway had some fun with the Ukranian border guards here, who kept making us fill and refill the entry cards, going on tea breaks and generally being unhelpful, forcing our driver to wait for some time. I have no idea whether they were just being bureaucratic or hinting at a bribe. Anyway, fill out the card very carefully first time and keep smiling and you will get through!

Northwest to Zamość, Lublin

Many drivers proceeding through the border crossing are smugglers who go no further than the parking lot on the Polish side. However, it is easy to stop a car on the road leading away from the border crossing, a bit up from the police checkpoint and next to the sign reading "Welcome to the European Union".
