If you are not a native speaker of a language, it might be worthwhile to access hitchwiki.org using Firefox and download the dictionary from [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:3 Mozilla] for the language in which you are writing your contribution, so that you can spell-check what you're typing. As for using UK or US spelling, I'd suggest to use US spelling, but feel free to voice your objections.

Would you think it would be possible to set up a Russian branch of hitchwiki on ru.hitchwiki.org? Hitching is extremely popular in Russia and other former USSR countries, and I am fairly sure we will be able to find contributors!

Hey, I thouhgt a lot about russian part of hitchwiki. I think we need main_page like in Finnish hitchwiki. But I don't know how to create it. :( Russian part should be devoted mostly to Russia and other russian speaking regions of ex_СНГ. I'm a Brazilian Hitchhiker, and native Portuguese speaker. I think there is very little material about hitchhiking in my language. I can translate articles get my language, and I know that some hitchhikers are now on the roads of Brazil and South America, which could also help. Even with specific information about Brazil and South America. What you think of opening a pt.hitchwiki.org?

: Yes, I discussed that with [[User:Vrana|Vrana]]. The thing is, that serbo-croatian does not exist officially and the code sh is obsolete. Spelling

If you are not a native speaker of a language, it might be worthwhile to access hitchwiki.org using Firefox and download the dictionary from Mozilla for the language in which you are writing your contribution, so that you can spell-check what you're typing. As for using UK or US spelling, I'd suggest to use US spelling, but feel free to voice your objections.

-1 articles?

On the front page of the French and the German Hitchwiki it now says that there are -1 articles. Is this just temporary? guakasite, wikitalk 20:35, 10 September 2007 (CEST)

I hope so ;) I have no idea what the reason for this is, but I'll surely fix it. --MrTweek 20:42, 10 September 2007 (CEST)
It's fixed now, at least in the German version. I think you need at least 1 or 2 articles (excluding main page, templates, user pages, etc) to get this working properly. --MrTweek 21:29, 10 September 2007 (CEST)

Images

It would be great if the same images were usable on all Hitchwikis. Maybe something for the future? It might even be somehow possible to get in touch with Wikimedia Commons, and use that one as our image repository? guakasite, wikitalk 20:35, 10 September 2007 (CEST)

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use completely shared repositories. But you can define one external repository for each wiki. So we could the English one as a global repository, because it has the most images. Would be cool if you could ask the guys from wikimedia commons. Or maybe their repository is already open for third-party wikis? --MrTweek 20:42, 10 September 2007 (CEST)
Alright, I configured that. You can now use images from the local wiki, but also from the wiki. If an image exists in both wikis, the local version will be displayed. --MrTweek 22:47, 10 September 2007 (CEST)

Newsletter

I think it might be a good Idea to send a newsletter to the yahoo-group. Many users probably forgot about hitchwiki but might be more interested to work on a wiki in their language.

I'll start a draft here, feel free to add something.

Draft

Dear fellow hitchhiker,

Most of you probably already know www.hitchwiki.org.
Now we happily want to announce that we are going international. SAn from Argentina started a Spanish wiki that you can find at http://www.autostopwiki.com.ar/.
Abgefahren e.V., the German hitchhiking club started a German one at http://de.hitchwiki.org/.
Because we had some French users lately, we also decided to set up http://fr.hitchwiki.org.
If you are familiar with one of those languages, we want to invite you to help building these wikis, no matter if you add new content, or just translate from the English pages.

Also, if you are interested in having Hitchwiki in any other language, and have some time to work on that, just let us know, we are happy to start wikis in more languages if there is enough interest.

And, if your are interested in the future of Hitchwiki, check http://hitchwiki.org/Hitchwiki:Organization and leave your comments, if you have some.

happy hitching,

The Hitchwiki Team:

  • MrTweek
  • Guaka
  • Platschi
