:: People do not ask, but it might sometimes expected as some gesture of friendship. Most people did not even look how much you gave (everybody gives as much as he can afford or finds appreciated), but the good will counts. But this was only our impression, sometimes we did give something, sometimes we did not not (as I get a coffee etc. for the driver in Germany sometimes too). You can also state from the beginning that you are a ''real'' hitchhiker and do not want to pay.
