Why add hitchhiking info to this wiki?

  • This project uses the GNU Free Documentation License, a free, copyleft license, implying that anyone can copy, modify or even sell it. And any copy and modification will also be under this license. (So if someone starts selling it, anyone can. So the price will be low, and improvements can easily be put back into this site.)
  • It will be easy to take this information in your favourite portable device running GNU/Linux. Guaka is working on downloadable versions of this wiki for the Nokia 770, and software to access it.
  • It's a wiki, so information is supposed to become more accurate over time.
  • At some point we'll probably want to move to a nicer domain name, with no or less ads. And please contact Guaka if you're interested in helping with this.

Why not to add to Wikitravel

  • It gets lost in big articles containing irrelevant information for hitchhikers.
  • Wikitravel likes to delete a lot of stuff.
  • Wikitravel still doesn't provide a database dump and that is needed to make versions for devices like phones.

Of course, it is suggested you doubly-license your work here under both the GFDL and the CC-BY-SA licenses (all versions, since Wikitravel is still on version 1.0).

Why not to add to Wikipedia

  • Hitchhiking info doesn't really fit well into an encyclopedia.

Why not add to other hitchhiking websites

  • There are no other websites about hitchhiking using a free license. If there are any: please mention, it might be possible to cooperate.
  • There are no other wikis about hitchhiking. Wikis are cool.
