In order to give the zine a personal feel, I think that all articles and "descriptive" parts should be written individually. Of course hitching information, places to sleep and eat, etc should come straight from the Wiki, but if someone has something cool to say about a particular city or whatever, they should be allowed to say it without having it "wikified" and edited to uniformity. That would also give us a good opportunity to give individual writers some credit so that it adds more personality to the zine. ==What gets included?==
We need to decide the scope of the zine first. Global, continental, or just a select few countries? After we have that decided we can decide what gets included within that scope. Should we follow the norm and inlcude major cities, or should we do something completely odd and exclude every capital? If we have our scope decided we can work out a system of nominations and then vote to slim it down to 3-5 cities per country or something.

This first edition of the zine is going to be mostly limited to Western Europe, although, though there have been some nominations for a few Central European countries. Please try to only nominate pages with a good bit of information.

Zac is thinking 50 sheets, center folded. Standard photocopy zine format. "I would want to do it for non-profit of course. Hitchhikers don't have money for guides! If you're interested, I have a little experience with zine pressing and we could mail them out for like $2 a peice or something to help fund this site further and the pressing of the zines. Just let me know."

Another option is Lulu.

Salman recommends offering up a free PDF format online with the possibility to donate (using PayPal, for example). A mail version could be sent for $2, but in the spirit of hitchhiking it's nice to have the free option. See our hitchhiking phrasebooks and US hitchhiking laws road guide on digihitch.com as an example. (Sorry, must be logged into digihitch to download road laws for now, changing soon.)

Nominations
Please nominate cities you think should be included. Remember, we doing Western and Southern Europe only. We should include about three cities per country, but nominate as many as you like and we'll discuss them later. The little images to the right of the lists indicate how much progress I've made on compiling that section. This is subject to change, but for now 25% means that I have formatting the information from the Hitchwiki into the zine, %50 will be once I have researched and added additional info (sleep, eat, etc) and %75 will be on design for print. 100% is a mystical number that I hope to reach one day.

The actual length of this "zine" might put it at odds with actually being printed as a zine at all. The most you can really hope to staple together is about 50 pages, and this will likely exceed that. Zac is currently looking into various methods of production to deal with this. We will probably end up publishing it in a variety of formats.

Hitchhiking Zine is an idea by Zac

Goal

 • Create a usable "travel guide" for hitchhikers with as much information and little bloat as possible.

What gets included?

This first edition of the zine is going to be mostly limited to Western Europe, although, though there have been some nominations for a few Central European countries. Please try to only nominate pages with a good bit of information.

Publishing

The actual length of this "zine" might put it at odds with actually being printed as a zine at all. The most you can really hope to staple together is about 50 pages, and this will likely exceed that. Zac is currently looking into various methods of production to deal with this. We will probably end up publishing it in a variety of formats.

Free, downloadable and printable PDF file

Zac has been experimenting with some perl scripting in combination with PSUtils and has come up with a way that a user could select various "chapters" and then the script would process the chapters into printer's spreads and be available for the user to download and print in PDF format.

Book

Printing the zine as a book is an idea that Zac fancies very much. He would prefer to find a cheap book printer to do the job, but since there's no way of telling if anyone would be willing to pay $5 or so for a book, Lulu may be used at first to test the water. If the project does indeed become book sized, Zac may print a few with Lulu to see how it goes. They could be sold at a price to cover just printing and shipping, or slightly more if we wanted to use this as a project to raise money to cover the hosting of Hitchwiki.
